An outbreak of porcine malignant catarrhal fever in a farrow-to-finish swine farm in the United States

چکیده
Malignant catarrhal fever is a sporadic, often fatal viral disease affecting multiple species, including swine. Ovine herpesvirus type 2 (OvHV-2), the cause of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever, incites nonspecific clinical signs and occasional death in swine. An outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever in a farrow-to-finish swine farm in the United States was confirmed by identifying OvHV-2 DNA in two clinically affected adult swine previously exposed to sheep. Forty-one swine exhibited clinical signs of lethargy, anorexia, and fever, with recovery or death in 22 and 19 animals, respectively. Abortion was also reported in two clinically affected pregnant females. Ovine herpesvirus type 2 DNA was identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in spleen, brain, and lung tissue. A BLAST homology search of the sequenced PCR amplicon matched the conserved region of the OvHV-2 tegument protein. Porcine malignant catarrhal fever is difficult to diagnose due to the nonspecific clinical signs, rarity of occurrence, and sporadic nature of the disease. Polymerase chain reaction assays and serologic testing are available to assist in an accurate diagnosis. Veterinarians should consider malignant catarrhal fever a potential differential diagnosis in swine with poorly defined clinical signs, intermittent death, and previous exposure to sheep.

An outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), a fatal viral disease in indigenous Tanzanian shorthorn zebu in Ngorongoro district of Tanzania during the period of June 2004 has been described. The disease was diagnosed by clinical, post mortem findings and the virus was identified using molecular characterization study. The history and clinical features included pyrexia, cornel opacity, nasal...

Group A rotaviruses (GARs) are one of the most common causes of diarrhea in suckling pigs. Although a number of G and P genotypes have been identified in porcine GARs, few attempts have been made to study the molecular epidemiology of these viruses associated with diarrhea outbreaks within a farm over an extended period of time. Here, we investigated the molecular characteristics of GARs that c...

The economic losses of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) and the net benefits of strategies to control the virus are calculated for individual farrow-to-finish herds. A production simulation model that estimates the number of pigs by population cohorts on a weekly basis for a farrow-to-finish farm depending on production parameters is simulated under normal operating conditions and then with an o...

Two cases of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in pigs were diagnosed on a small farm in New York, and in Kentucky. In both cases, the initial diagnosis was based on histopathological changes representing typical lymphoproliferative vasculitis in multiple tissues of the affected pigs. Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the tissues of aff...
